During the rest of my run (which lasted another 3 or 4 hours it seemed) I contemplated this enigma. What I came up with is this. Runners run into oncoming traffic. Therefore the drivers see the runners face. This humanizes the athlete and the driver decides not to kill the person. Cyclists ride with traffic and all that the driver sees is another obstacle in his/her way to get where they are going.
Its obvious that we can't ride into traffic because we will get killed by right hand turning cars, so maybe the solution lies in putting a giant photo of your face on the back of your jersey.

haha funny post! chris says it's cause drivers seem to get more annoyed that they have to share their space with bikes but for some reason not with runners--maybe cause runners usually run on the sidewalk.
i get scared every time he road cycles. the picture jersey is a great idea-- you should sell the product :)
Or perhaps a Jersey with BIG letters on the back saying - "Human on board, Please go around!" I think you've nailed the issue however. Can't we get some federal funds for a massive re-education product?
Pat you have an interesting way of looking at things - I love it. I wish you would write more. You have a talent that you need to develop.
Thanks mom. And I wont mention that you sound like a fortune cookie either.
